Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a after market programming
cable for the AOR8200 as the one sold by AOR is very costly at around if
I recall £80 mark - which seems a lot for a programming cable ?

Anyone can help ?

I am new to scanning and live in Somerset nr to the Wiltshire / Dorset
border, generally it seems quiet for the most part apart from Aircraft
traffic, if anyone is aware of any frequencies I would really appreciate
help.

Thanks

Rgds

It's easy enough to make a cable and interface, but the problem
comes when trying to obtain the plug for the computer end. It
isn't a standard type and doesn't seem to be available as a spare
part.

Well someone has to live near Wiltshire! Proma posted a list for
Somerset/Avon at my request not so very long ago.

AOR do see a cable with the plug at one end and bare connection at the
other. It's not cheap but would still allow you to make up your own
interface for around £20.
The same plug is used by some of the HP Journada palmtops and this as a
spare part used to be cheaper than the AOR one (cable colours aren't the
same in the HP cable).
For freqs try the online database at:

yes but this cable (the OS8200?) connected straight to a serial port will not work. In the CC8200 there's a small circuit board
tucked inside the plug and without it you will not get PC control.

Quite so. You need a MAX-232 chip to interface it to your
computer's serial port.

The circuitry required is readily available, as is the chip.

yes it is a lot but in the end you'll have to just fork out the green ones like I did. No way round it. Maybe you'll pick up a
slightly cheaper one on ebay if you're lucky, but then there's the postage on top and if it's cheap because it's cheap-and-nasty it
could end up damaging your scanner. Gotta be careful.

I'm not aware of anybody else in the UK producing an alternative to the
AOR 8200PC at the moment.

We have in the past produced "RS-8200" AR8200 interface and "JAV-232"
interface but at the moment neither are available I'm afraid.

There is an AOR interface and CD listed on eBay at the moment:
