I have a icom ic-r5 scanner, I have AM band, does this mean I can receive AM
radio broadcasts such as 5 live (909)or talk sport (1089) I can pick up FM
radio but can not find AM, sorry about this but I am new to scanning.

Cheers Keith

Depends if you can select AM mode between 600 and 1400 Khz. I imagine on an
R5 you can.

AM is more used for aircraft traffic, US spec CB, Fire, traffic police etc.

R5 would be 0.909 MHz AM
TS would be 1.089 MHz AM

Some scanners cover the required frequency range but are very insensitive
with their built in aerial.
If I remember correctly the R5 will work reasonably well.

I have an R5 and yes you can hear AM radio, such as 5live, but tuning can be
a faff about. You can also listen to the tele as well.
